Steps to Study in Canada for International Students
Step 1: Understand Visa Procedures
The first and most important step before applying to Canada is to understand the Visa application process. Canada divides visas into two types: SDS and General. All Indian students are directed to the Student Direct Stream, which is a type of visa procedure.
It does, however, have qualifying parameters such as:
- A DLI IELTS – Straight 6.0 or higher Confirmed, Unconditional Offer letter (overall as well as in each of the modules)
- 1-year complete payment of tuition fees
- GIC stands for Guaranteed Investment Certificate.
Anything above and beyond this falls under the General Category. So, before applying for a study permit in Canada, make sure you understand the requirements and plan ahead of time. Begin the entire process a year in advance.
Step 2: Opt for DLI Institution and Course
Understand the Canadian educational system and the various levels at which international students can apply to study. Filter out your preferences and constraints before choosing a DLI (Designated Learning Institution). DLIs are responsible for admitting international students.
Understand the admission requirements in order to apply and meet all of them. Then, apply at the appropriate portal and time. When choosing the major courses, don’t leave any options open. Every institute’s academic structure is adaptable. Change your focus from one course to another. Before making a major decision, weigh your options. Furthermore, application deadlines complicate the process of short-listing institutes. If you have a specific aspiring institute, consider the deadlines well in advance.
Step 3: Crack Language Proficiency Test
Do students have a say in whether or not they take the language proficiency test?
As non-native English speakers, the results of English Language Proficiency Tests must be submitted to institutes for admission and visa application processes.
However, various tests are administered to demonstrate English proficiency. IELTS/PTE/TOEFL/CAEL are widely accepted in Canada. IELTS is widely accepted. Even for SDS Visas, IELTS is the only exam (you can apply in the Non-SDS Category with PTE/TOEFL, and this has yielded positive results as well, but IELTS is the only one).
At the same time, TEF is the most commonly used exam for applicants wishing to take the French exam. Once you’ve decided on a test, you can pay fees and reserve dates in advance. Improve your communication abilities.
Step 4: Apply to Different Universities
Every applicant must choose a few universities from a list of a dozen. The application fee ranges between $100 and $250. There is no need to apply right away.
Choose two to five institutes as a backup plan and begin comparing the options based on courses. Fill out your application form with caution. Provide precise information backed up by documentary evidence. You will soon be accepted. After confirming interest, the university will send an acceptance letter.
It is an LoA
Letter of Acceptance, which means that the institute has accepted your application and granted you admission. The LoA specifies a validity date as well as a deposit payment deadline. To confirm the offer, you must pay the Deposit amount (Token Amount) or the full one-semester to one-year tuition fee payment within the time frame specified. (If not, the offer letter will be withdrawn.)
Step 5: Applying for a Study Permit
You can apply for a Canadian permit once you have been admitted to the institution. Please obtain all necessary documents, such as a Medical Certificate, Standardized Passport Photograph, Financial Document – GIC, Police Clearance Certificate, IELTS TRF Copy (or any English Proficiency Test Result), academic Documents, DLI – LoA – Acceptance Letter, Tuition Fee Deposit Receipt, SOP – Client Information Document, and so on, before applying for the visa. Because the only way to apply in this Pandemic is online, only apply online. (Go to cic.gc.ca) As part of the study in Canada requirements, you must upload all documents. Additionally, they differ by province.
Step 6: Book Your Own Biometric
The system will generate the Biometric Information Letter after you submit the Visa Application. You can either book your own Biometric appointment or the IRCC will provide you with a biometric appointment letter. Meanwhile, your file is being monitored.
At the entry point, the immigration officer verifies the study permit and other documents. In other words, it is the final step in the immigration process. Keep an eye on your CIC account (GC Key Account) for Passport Request updates.
The PPR (Passport Request) indicates that your visa has been approved, and the passport request is for the Visa Approval Stamping. Concentrate on the start of your journey as an international student.
Step 7: Time to Travel to Canada
Your permit has a beginning and an ending date. It takes effect the moment you enter the country. You will be denied entry into the country before the start date. Travel should be planned accordingly. However, once the visa is obtained, multiple entries and exits are possible. Make your flight reservations and a watertight quarantine plan. Fly with caution.
